Living on the edge of the Lake District with a Cockapoo means dog products get properly tested in our house. Muddy fell paths, wet grass, lakes, puddles and Harley’s impressive ability to locate the dirtiest patch of ground mean the things that earn a permanent place in our cupboard are usually the ones that solve a real problem.

If I were buying again, I’d prioritise good poo bags, muddy-paw wipes, decent food, reliable walking gear and a few simple grooming products. You really don’t need every gadget marketed to dog owners.

1. Floofs Pet Wipes — the muddy-paw essential
If Harley comes home with muddy paws but isn’t dirty enough for a full wash, pet-safe wipes are incredibly handy. We keep them near the door and they’re particularly useful in the car after wet walks.
Best for: quick clean-ups after wet grass, puddles and everyday muddy walks.

This might be the least glamorous recommendation on the website, but it’s something we use every day. We’ve tried these ourselves and they’ve never failed us. When you’re halfway up a hill and carrying a bag for another mile, that matters more than fancy packaging.

3. Pure Pet Food — easy at home and away

4. Floofs Paw & Nose Balm — for paws doing plenty of miles
Rocky paths, wet ground and long walking days can be hard on paws. A balm is useful to have around when healthy pads are feeling dry or rough — although it isn’t a substitute for checking sore or damaged paws properly.

5. Floofs Ear Cleaner — useful for floppy ears

If we know a Lake District walk is going to be wet, the towel and wipes go in the car before we leave. Otherwise the cleaning kit is inevitably at home while Harley stands in the boot looking like he’s been rolled in a bog.
6. A proper walking setup
A comfortable harness, secure collar and dependable lead are worth researching because you’ll use them thousands of times. For hilly walks, fit and control matter far more to me than simply choosing the prettiest option. Our harness guides and lead guides are useful next reads.
7. A muddy-dog station by the door
Keep wipes, an old towel, poo bags, treats and paw products together by the door. When a soaking-wet Cockapoo arrives home delighted with himself, everything is within reach.
8. Treats you can actually carry on walks

9. Something personalised

10. Products that solve an actual problem
This is the biggest lesson I’ve learned. Don’t buy something because social media says every dog owner needs it. Ask what problem it solves: muddy paws? Wipes. Flimsy poo bags? Better bags. Dry pads? Balm. Awkward food for trips away? Find a more convenient option.

The products I’d buy again aren’t necessarily the most exciting ones. They’re the things that make walks, feeding, cleaning and everyday dog life easier. Buy for the dog and life you actually have — not the cupboard full of gadgets the internet says you need.
