CHIEF TESTER • PROFESSIONAL CHAOS COORDINATOR 🐾

Meet Harley

A certified nut ball, part-time rabbit, full-time snack enthusiast and the four-legged reason Harley Barley & Co exists.

Harley is a Cockapoo with a big personality, an impressive appetite and very strong opinions about how much attention one small dog should receive. He’s the inspiration behind our walks, guides, reviews and the lessons we’ve picked up while learning life with a dog as we go.

🐾 Lake District based, snack motivated, and usually at the centre of whatever chaos is happening.

HOW IT STARTED

We think he chose us, too.

Once we’d decided our home was ready for the pitter-patter of a four-legged friend, we spent hours researching breeds and discussing what would suit us. One of us had grown up with Miniature Schnauzers and the other with Labradors, so a Cockapoo felt like the perfect middle ground: plenty of energy, scruffy hair and just the right size for our little first home.

Then we spotted Harley. His unusual markings — especially his bright orange beard and feet — immediately stood out. But it was meeting the litter that sealed it.

We went into that first visit expecting to spend our time trying to work out which puppy might be right for us. Harley made the decision considerably easier. While the others were busy doing their own thing, he made a beeline for us, climbed straight into our laps and seemed perfectly happy to stay there.

There was something about him from the start: confident enough to come over, cuddly enough to settle in, and already showing flashes of the cheeky personality that now runs our house. We left feeling as though the choice had rather been taken out of our hands.

Harley as a puppy

While the other puppies couldn’t have been less interested in us, Harley crawled straight into our laps.

That was that. 🐾

We firmly believe he chose us just as much as we chose him. And, looking back, we had absolutely no idea how much personality we were about to bring home.

LIFE WITH HARLEY

Approximately 90% lunatic, 10% sleepy angel.

Harley has endless amounts of energy. He bounds around more like a rabbit than a dog, hopping from pillar to post as though every day has been personally organised for his entertainment.

Our favourite Harley, though, appears after a long day of being a lunatic. The sleepy evening version curls up with us, laps up the undivided attention and somehow manages to look criminally cute enough that we forget whatever chaos happened earlier.

He loves long walks and, living at the south of the Lake District, he’s spoilt for choice: hills, lakes (and occasionally in the lakes), beaches, quiet villages and, ideally, a pub stop somewhere along the way. Preferably one that understands he would also like a treat.

  • A very long walk
  • Something muddy

🐾   Harley, in a nutshell   🐾

🍗 Labrador at heart

Harley is extremely food driven. Paw? Easy. Spin? Absolutely. Sit nicely in bed? For around five seconds. We’re currently negotiating the terms of “roll over”.

🧲 Cockapoo through & through

He is a Velcro dog in every sense. If one of his humans moves rooms, Harley considers that a group activity. Being left alone is still a work in progress, but he’s getting better.

🐶 Brave-ish

He adores other dogs but can sometimes be nervous when a much bigger dog bounds over. He’s often mistaken for a puppy, despite being fully grown, and we’re always working on building his confidence.

THE INNER CIRCLE

Daisy, Willow & one very persistent Cockapoo

Harley’s two best friends are Daisy and Willow, two gorgeous Labradors who definitely give him a run for his money when they’re let loose in a field.

The slight problem is that Labradors occasionally enjoy sleeping. Harley considers naps an administrative error that should be corrected immediately, so we’re not completely convinced Daisy and Willow would always rank him quite as highly on their own friendship lists.

Still, in Harley’s world, he’s basically a Labrador anyway. 🐾

A MOMENT FOR GOOSE 🪿

Gone, but repeatedly replaced.

For many, many months Harley’s favourite toy was Goose. Unfortunately for Goose, he was a soft toy — and during the tenacious puppy-teething era, his stitching proved far too inviting.

Goose eventually became stuffingless. Then Goose became another Goose. And another. At this point, “Goose” is less a toy and more a dynasty.

There is quite often an unstuffed piece of goose hanging around the house while we wait to replace him. Harley does not appear remotely concerned by this.

Stuffed or not, he still loves his Goose. 🐾

He’s still figuring things out. So are we.

Harley loves people and other dogs, but that doesn’t mean everything comes naturally. Being left alone is probably his least favourite thing — weekly shopping night is certainly not highlighted in his calendar — and bigger, bouncier dogs can occasionally make him unsure.

He’ll soon be starting doggy day care, which we hope will help build his confidence even further. We keep working on the things he finds difficult, celebrating the small wins and accepting that dog ownership is rarely a neat before-and-after story.

Ultimately, we love Harley more than life itself and can barely remember what our home felt like before him. It was probably quieter. It was definitely less hairy. 🐾

Why Harley Barley & Co?

When Harley came along, we found a lot of dog information online — but also a lot of conflicting advice, confusing recommendations and endless tabs trying to answer one simple question.

Harley Barley & Co is our attempt to make that easier: one friendly place where dog owners can find advice, training ideas, food guides, adventures and recommendations without having to navigate the whole internet first.

🐾

How we recommend things

We want recommendations to be useful, not just a list of links. Where we have personal experience, we’ll tell you what worked for us — and what didn’t. We also draw on reputable sources, established review platforms and wider owner experiences when researching guides.

Not every product will suit every dog, and we’ll never pretend otherwise. The aim is to give you enough honest information to decide what might work for yours.

Ready to join the chaos?

From muddy Lake District walks to things that actually keep a busy dog entertained, there’s plenty more to sniff around.
