Coniston is a brilliant base for dog walking because you can choose between lakeshore, woodland and fell scenery without travelling far. It also works well for dogs that enjoy variety rather than hours on exposed high ground.
1. Tarn Hows — best easy Coniston walk
The main Tarn Hows circuit is under two miles, follows a good track and delivers classic Lake District scenery for relatively little effort. Dogs are very welcome on leads; livestock graze around the tarn throughout the year.

2. Monk Coniston & Tarn Hows — best longer outing
If the standard tarn loop is too short, the National Trust’s Monk Coniston and Tarn Hows route links lake, woodland and countryside. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on leads because livestock may be present.

3. Holme Fell — best for bigger views
Holme Fell offers more ascent without becoming one of the huge Lake District days. It is a good progression when your dog is comfortable on rougher paths and you want 360-degree scenery rather than a surfaced circuit.
