🐾 Harley Barley tip: Ambleside is an easy base because you can choose between a quick lakeside leg-stretch, sheltered woodland or a proper fell walk without travelling far. Ambleside is one of the best places in the central Lakes for combining a dog walk with lunch or a wander around town. You can keep things low-level close to Windermere or climb higher when everyone has more energy.
1. Waterhead & Borrans Park — best easy lakeside option
Starting around Waterhead gives you an easy way to enjoy the northern end of Windermere without heading straight onto the fells. Borrans Park has lake views, open space and paths around the Roman fort area, making it useful for a shorter first or last walk of the day.
2. Stagshaw Garden & Skelghyll Woods — best woodland choice
Dogs are welcome on leads at Stagshaw Garden and Skelghyll Woods. This is a good option when you want trees, shade and a quieter-feeling walk close to Ambleside.

3. Ambleside to Troutbeck via Wansfell — best bigger walk
This National Trust circular is around 5.8 miles and takes roughly four to five hours. It uses country lanes, woods, fields and rougher fell paths, with a more challenging return over Wansfell Pike. Dogs are welcome, but should be kept on a lead around livestock.
